If someone asks you to download an app like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or ScreenMeet under the pretext of fixing a bank issue, verifying a KYC status, or helping with a refund, stop immediately. These applications are legitimate tools for IT support, but in the hands of a fraudster, they grant complete control over your smartphone.
The Red Flags
Scammers often create a sense of urgency. They might call claiming to be from your bank’s customer care or a popular food delivery platform, insisting that your account will be blocked or a payment is stuck unless you install a "support app."
Once installed, these apps provide a nine-digit code or a request for permission. If you share this code or grant permission, the scammer can see everything on your screen, including your UPI PINs, banking passwords, and SMS OTPs.
Why You Should Never Comply
Legitimate banks and government agencies in India will never ask you to install third-party screen-sharing software. If a bank official needs to update your KYC, they will direct you to their official mobile application or ask you to visit the nearest branch. Never trust a caller who insists on "remote assistance" to resolve a digital transaction issue.
What to Do If You've Been Targeted
If you have already installed such an app, uninstall it immediately and switch your phone to airplane mode to sever the connection. If you suspect your banking credentials were exposed, contact your bank’s official customer service number—find this only on the back of your debit card or the bank’s official website—to freeze your accounts.
Do not wait to report the incident. You can register a complaint by calling 1930, which is the national cybercrime helpline, or by visiting the official Cyber Crime Portal. Reporting the fraud quickly increases the chances of freezing the transaction before the money is moved to a mule account.
