Searching for a customer care number on Google often leads to sponsored links or fraudulent websites designed to look like official pages. Scammers frequently place fake numbers in search results, waiting for you to call them so they can ask for remote access apps or UPI PINs.
Stick to Official Channels
The safest way to find a contact number is to look at the back of your physical debit or credit card. Banks print their official helpline number there, and it is the most reliable source of information. If you are dealing with a service provider, open their official mobile app. Look for a 'Contact Us' or 'Help & Support' section within the authenticated dashboard of the app; these links are almost always legitimate.
Check Social Media Verification
Companies have verified social media handles on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. Look for the blue or gold checkmark. Often, these profiles have a 'pinned' post or a dedicated 'About' section that lists their active toll-free numbers. If you find a number on a website that doesn't match the one on the verified social media page, stop immediately.
What to Avoid
Never trust numbers found in random blog posts, third-party directories, or comments sections on social media. Scammers often post fake 'urgent' help numbers under posts where people are complaining about service issues. They prey on your frustration to get you to call them.
If you accidentally call a number and the person on the other end asks you to download apps like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or ScreenShare, hang up. No legitimate customer care executive needs to view your screen to resolve a basic billing or account issue. They will also never ask for your UPI PIN or OTP to 'verify' your identity or process a refund.
Reporting Suspicious Numbers
If you realize you have been targeted by a fake customer care number, report it immediately. You can dial 1930, which is the national cyber crime helpline managed by the MHA. You should also register a complaint on the official Cyber Crime portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Providing the fake number you called helps authorities track and block these lines.
