The Digital Arrest Scam: How Fake CBI Officers Threaten Victims

A disturbing new trend in cybercrime has emerged in India: the "Digital Arrest." Unlike physical arrests, this takes place entirely online, leveraging fear, authority, and intimidation to extort millions of rupees from innocent citizens.

Victims range from software engineers to retired doctors, all falling prey to a highly organized syndicate operating fake police stations.

The Modus Operandi

The scam typically begins with an automated IVR call claiming your mobile number will be blocked because it has been used to send harassment messages, or that a parcel containing illegal items was intercepted.

When you press '9' for customer service, you are connected to a scammer posing as a TRAI or Customs official. They claim your identity has been stolen and used for money laundering.

The Virtual Interrogation Room

You are then forced to download Skype or WhatsApp and join a video call. The scammers are dressed in meticulously crafted police uniforms, complete with fake ID cards and police station backgrounds.

They place you under "Digital Arrest," ordering you to keep your camera on 24/7. They threaten you with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and demand a "security deposit" to clear your name.

The Legal Reality: Digital Arrest Doesn't Exist

Under Indian Law (CrPC/BNSS), there is no legal provision for a "Digital Arrest."

Real law enforcement agencies (CBI, ED, State Police) operate via formal legal notices (Section 41A CrPC / 35 BNSS). They never:

• Arrest or interrogate suspects over Skype/WhatsApp video calls.
• Demand "security deposits" to be transferred to personal bank accounts.
• Send arrest warrants via WhatsApp.

How to Protect Yourself

If you are targeted:

1. Hang Up immediately. Fear is their only weapon.
2. Block and Report the numbers on the Chakshu portal (Sanchar Saathi).
